Capo Carbonara-Villasimius
The Geo-marine Park covers about 9000 hectares and stretches over the coastal strip around Villasimius (Capo Boi, Capo Carbonara in the centre, Punta Porceddus), which abounds in beaches and rocky headlands, and the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara (uninhabited). The area offers a rich variety of marine life (including dolphins and sea turtles), as well as birds (in particular falcons) and until a few years ago there were also sightings of the rare monk seal. A number of important scientific research projects and environmental education schemes have been set up in the park (the nineteenth century lighthouse on the island of Cavoli has been put at the disposal of Cagliari University). The park also boasts some fascinating archaeological finds which lie on the sea bed, such as the wreck of a Spanish ship dating back to XV century, just off the island of Cavoli
