Poetto beach
Just ten minutes from the centre of the city, this beach offers 11 kilometres of fine sand and crystal clear waters. It has been very popular among locals since the beginning of the 1900s and gets so crowded in summer that it was named “the beach of the hundred thousand”. Characteristic wooden pile-chalets used to line the beach, but were removed in the early 1990s. Poetto underwent further changes in 2002 in an attempt to tackle the problem of sand erosion. Although the project restored a large amount of sand to the beach, its original beauty has been somewhat compromised
