Giara di Gesturi
The Giara is a basaltic plateau, which covers about 45 sq. km and is of volcanic origin. It is covered in woods of cork oaks, holm oaks and wild olive trees, as well as numerous species of flowers. The plateau is also home to the rare wild ponies (Giara Ponies), the only herd left in Italy and Europe, whose origins probably date back to the Phoenician period
