Iglesias

The name of the town derives from the place name “villa ecclesiae”, a reference to the numerous churches which are to be found in the historical centre. The town was conquered by the Carthaginians and the Romans, who were attracted by the area’s mineral resources, but it was under the Pisan rule that the town flourished when it was given to Ugolino della Gherardesca in the XIII century. Ugolino, in fact, ordered the construction of the town’s splendid cathedral, dedicated to Santa Chiara. After Catalan domination, the town rose again in the 1800s as a mining centre, but fell into decline in the mid 1900s when extraction work ceased
