Oristano

The name of the town derives from the Roman family who owned the land. In the XI century the town was populated by the inhabitants of Tharros, who were searching for safer more fertile land. However, it flourished in the XIV century when it became the chief town of the Arborea Judgeship and resisted the Catalan rule, drawing the whole of Sardinia into the conflict. The reigning Judge was the valiant Eleonora d’Arborea, who drew up the “Carta de Logu”, in 1392, a charter of laws which were extended to the whole island and stayed in force until 1827. Visitors must not miss the cathedral in the town centre, which still boasts the original bell tower from the fourteenth century
