Alghero

The Name Alghero derives from “Alighiera”, because of the large amount of algae which is washed up in various spots along the coast. The town was founded in the XII century by the Doria family of Genoa. In 1354, however, it was conquered by Pietro IV of Aragon, and the Sardinian and Ligurian inhabitants were chased out of the town. It thus became a Catalan stronghold and its name was changed to Alguer. This Catalan influence is still evident today in the town’s architecture, with its defence walls and towers, as well as in the local dialect and traditions. Besides the charming town centre, visitors must not miss the surroundings, which abound in natural treasures (the Marine Park of Porto Conte, the caves known as “Grotte di Nettuno”) and archaeological sites (the Anghelu Ruju necropolis, the Palmavera Nuraghe)
