Madonna del naufrago
This ceremony takes place in the sea near Villasimius, between Capo Carbinara and the island of Cavoli, where a trachyte statue of the Virgin Mary was placed on the sea bed, 10 metres below the surface, in 1979. The statue was the work of the sculptor Pinuccio Sciola. A striking procession of pleasure boats and fishing boats unwinds towards the sacred image and flowers are thrown into the water in honour of the Virgin, so she protects sailors who navigate in the waters there.
