The Festival of Sant’Efisio

The festival on the 1st May is the most important one on the island and it commemorates the Roman warrior who was martyred in 303 BC in Nora (a town situated 30 km from Cagliari). The procession starts from the church in Cagliari dedicated to the Saint and consists of a colourful display of local costumes as groups from all the participating towns and villages walk or ride beside beautifully decorated ox-drawn carts (”traccas”). At the rear of the procession there is a golden coach which holds the sacred image of the Saint. The Saint is carried to Nora, before it is returned to Cagliari on the 4th May.
