Lago Omodeo

This artificial basin, fed by the River Tirso, was created in 1924 with the construction of the Santa Chiara dam. It is 20km long and is the largest lake in Sardinia and was for a long time the biggest artificial lake in Europe. It lies in the Barigadu region, which abounds in small but fascinating towns, such as Sédilo, which hosts the “Ardia di San Costantino” (an impressive horse-riding event), and Tadasuni with its Museum of Musical Instruments. The lake also offers unusual spectacles in the driest months of the year when the low level of the water reveals the remains of numerous Nuraghi, as well as trees from a sort of “ghost forest”, which were submerged when the lake was created
